I was the music reporter one semester for the Kansas State Collegian and regularly went to East Stadium to talk with music professors about band and the K-State Singers. Also, I enjoyed going to the theater. I wasn’t much into football. I only went to one game there; but as an incoming freshman, orientation was held in the stadium.

In 1975, spring semester, I was taking some classes from the music department. They still were using rooms in the East Stadium, and I remember carrying much of Dr. Paul Shull’s supplies and equipment over to the new KSU music department facilities east of McCain Auditorium when that was finished. Dr. Shull still owes me a Coke for that. Music department faculty teaching clarinet, brass and piano had small studios there and were undoubtedly glad to move to the new digs. Seeing a Steinway grand piano taken out the second floor of rooms there, onto a rickety wooden landing and stairway, and down 15 feet of elevation was fascinating

I attended K-State as an undergraduate in the late 1960s. Of course, I remember football games at the stadium, but my most vivid memory is of having several music education classes on the east side of the stadium. I walked everywhere and the stadium was really a handy location.

I remember it for many reasons. I saw the football games between 1945 and 1949, and we walked down to the stadium for our graduation services. I took a free hand drawing class and it was a subject of one of my drawings. It is much like the old Nichols gym — where we saw all the great Wildcat basketball games — it’s such a great reminder of the early days of football at K-State.
