A summer reflection from the editor of K-Stater magazine
As we reach the dog days of summer, I took some time to reflect on the past few months
before the hustle of the school year begins. Here’s a look at some of my adventures
during this K-State summer in Manhattan.
— Tim Schrag '12, editor, K-Stater magazine
There’s no better way to kick off the summer than to watch K-Stater magazine’s summer issue roll off the press. For me that’s when summer truly starts.
The Alumni Association shows appreciation for its staff in a great many ways. One of which included a lunch from Vista Burger. Vista Burger is such a Manhattan staple.
Each year Konza Prairie Biological Station hosts a Wildflower Walk. The Wildflower Walk allows visitors to see Butterfly Hill Trail at the Konza Prairie. Groups of roughly 10 people are paired with knowledgeable docent guides who identify wildflowers and lead a 1.5 mile easy tour of the site. It’s a great way to see the Flint Hills up close and personal.
Nobody does Independence Day celebrations better than Wamego. They call it Boomtown for a reason. The fireworks show they put on is worth the short drive.
I’m a big fan of Tim Lindemuth ’77, the eighth editor of K-Stater magazine. He’s an expert writer and editor, but also a certified Master Gardener. This year his English garden was featured on the Riley County Master Gardener’s Garden Tour. I went to check it out and support Tim with Pat Hudgins ’11. Ever the storyteller, Tim even had pamphlets to inform visitors about his garden.
One of the things I love most about the summer in Manhattan is how easy it is to get a table at your favorite spots. Taco Lucha is one of those for me. Here I am with my friend Laura Thacker ’12, ’14. We’ve been meeting at Lucha since it opened during our time as undergrads.
My job requires a lot of photoshoots all over campus. I love them because they get you out of the office and to meet all kinds of people. Here’s a photo of our wonderful photographer David Mayes ’96 from a shoot for the fall issue and a behind-the-scenes photo I snapped of one of our photo subjects. I can’t wait for you to read the K-Stater.
