Photo essay

I often find myself exploring parts of Kansas State University that others might not have the opportunity to see. My role as editor of K-Stater magazine for the K-State Alumni Association opens doors to interesting places. It also sends me on fun side quests, away missions and other adventures. It’s one of my favorite parts of my job.

Here’s a behind the scenes look at some of those side quests that have happened this year:

Collegian newspaper

K-State memories

K-Staters donate and send the Alumni Association all kinds of memorabilia. Part of my role is collecting, cataloging and displaying those donations. In January, someone sent us this copy of the Kansas State Collegian from 1952. If you have something you’d like to add to our collection we’d love to have it.

Snow day

Snow day

On Feb. 2, cold temperatures and a large amount of snow caused campus to shut down for the day. I ventured out into the cold to see what campus looked like and share images for our Alumni Association social media channels. VIEW MORE

Hot off the presses

Hot off the presses

In March, I ventured over to Liberty, Missouri, to watch the K-Stater get printed. You can read more about that process here.

Conference

Sharing ideas

In April, I headed up to the University of Nebraska to meet with fellow alumni magazine editors from across the country. These are wonderful people who do great work for their universities. Having a chance to swap ideas and compare notes always helps me make the K-Stater a better product in the long run. It was also interesting to spend time in a place where students wear another color. I wore purple the whole time.

Deer

I spy...

Can you spot the deer? Walking across campus in late May, I found a deer wandering. Near Fairchild Hall and McCain Auditorium. Probably late for an exam.

Armadillo races

Boots and BBQ

In June the Alumni Association sent me to Texas to take photos at the North Texas Boots and BBQ event. It was the first of its kind. Here I am taking a photo with an armadillo used in the armadillo races. It was great fun. If you’d like to attend the 2023 Boots and BBQ event, we’d love to have you!

Coach Tang

Purple pride

September had me on the sidelines of Bill Snyder Family Stadium for multiple football games. Here I am with men’s basketball coach Jerome Tang before the win against Missouri. He is delightful. I cannot wait to see what he can do with the basketball team. Also during the game, I had the opportunity to view the second half from the photo deck. What a great view.

View of the Alumni Center

Top of the tower

Speaking of amazing views, I had the opportunity to photograph the K-State Alumni Center from the top of the new bell tower at St. Isidore’s Catholic Student Center. Heights aren’t my favorite thing in the world but this was certainly worth the climb.

We hope you've enjoyed this behind the scenes look and we'll feature more soon!
